The influence of UV irradiation of KrCl-excilamp (λirr ~ 222 nm) on biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs: anthracene, phenanthrene, and naphthalene) by activated sludge treatment has been investigated using absorption and fluorescence spectrometry and the chromatography method. Our results show that photoreaction products: anthraquinone and phenanthraquinone indicate that hydroxylation reaction is involved. The loss of PAHs in hexane after the impact to the KrCl-excilamp irradiation has been determined. Degradation of PAHs solution was faster by integrated photo- and activated sludge treatment than biodegradation alone.
