The paper presents the results of theoretical investigations of the effects of dead time of a counting device on the photocounts statistics for the laser beam passed through a turbulent atmospheric layer. These theoretical results are confirmed experimentally. It is also shown in this paper that the calculated probability distributions for photocounts do differ from those measured experimentally at high levels of optical signals. The derived analytical approximations allowed the correction of the photocounts distributions at high count rates for the influence of dead time to be made.
