Specific features inherent in the echo-signal formation within cumuli fields are discussed. The mean lidar return power as a function of the individual cloud geometry and the vertical profile of the extinction coefficient is examined. The effect of the multiple cross-scattering by clouds on the temporal variations of the backscattered signal is estimated. The evaluation of the underlying surface albedo in the presence of a single-layered cloudiness is shown to be feasible.
